Paper abstracts are invited for the mini-conference Capital and Labor Mobility in Agriculture and Food in the Global Era to be held in Recife, Brazil, May 27-28, 2007. This mini-conference will take place in conjunction with the meeting of the Brazilian Sociological Association. Its objective is to allow participants to share scientific contributions on topics related to the broader themes of a) the mobility of production capital and finance capital; b) labor mobility and c) the consequences of capital mobility on local governance and socio-economic development. Works on the globalization of agriculture and food have empirically and theoretically documented the significance of the mobility of various forms of capital (finance capital; production capital; labor) and its impact on the production and consumption of food and on the groups and regions involved in these processes. While referring to the hyper-mobility of production capital; the velocity with which finance capital is allocated; the mobility of labor; or the consequences that it has on localities; the theme of mobility has occupied the attention of a number of contributors to the agro-food literature. Yet, the multifaceted aspects of capital mobility, the profound impacts that it had on social relations, and the rapid pace of change, require further investigation. This mini-conference is designed to contribute to this goal by proposing an integrated discussion of studies that explore various dimension of the issue of capital mobility in agriculture and food in the global era. Submitted papers will be considered for inclusion in an edited volume scheduled to be published in 2008. Abstracts can be written in English, Spanish, or Portuguese and should be submitted electronically before March 1, 2007 to Salete Cavalcanti at jsaletec@hotlink.com.br or Alessandro Bonanno at soc_aab@shsu.edu
