Call for Nominations for AFHVS Awards

The Awards Committee of the Agriculture, Food, and Human Values Society seeks nominees for four awards to be presented at the joint AFHVS and Association for the Study of Food and Society (ASFS) conference at Indiana University in Bloomington, IN, June 2-6.

Nominations must be submitted by April 15, 2010 to the committee chair at the address listed below. One award per category may be made at the discretion of the committee.

Distinguished Lifetime Achievement in Agriculture, Food, and Human Values

Purpose: To honor persons who in their careers have made outstanding contributions toward realizing the goals of the Agriculture, Food, and Human Values Society through research, teaching, extension, public service, or public policy.

Nomination Procedure:

  • A cover letter from the principal nominator(s) that details the nominee’s contributions and makes the case for why the candidate deserves the award.
  • The nominee's current vita.
  • Two or three letters of support from AFHVS members familiar with the nominee’s contributions.
  • Selected publications, student or peer evaluations, and/or other professionally relevant materials (optional).

Excellence in Research

Purpose: To recognize AFHVS members who have made outstanding research contributions important to some aspect of agriculture, food, and human values.

Nomination Procedure:

  • A cover letter from the principal nominator detailing the member's contributions to substantive areas of research and/or theory and other qualifications for the award.
  • A current vita for the nominee.
  • Two or three letters of support (at least one of the letters from an AFHVS member).
  • No more than three examples of the nominee's research (optional).

Excellence in Instruction

Purpose: To recognize AFHVS members for outstanding teaching related to agriculture, food, and human values at the graduate and/or undergraduate level.

Nomination Procedure:

  • A cover letter from the principal nominator describing the member's innovations and commitment to teaching and learning related to a particular course, thematic area, population of students or pedagogical approach or technique.
  • A current vita for the nominee.
  • Two or three letters of support (at least one letter from a faculty member other than the nominee and one from a student).

Excellence in Public Service

Purpose: To honor AFHVS members who have made academic or non-academic contributions that have had a significant public service impact on the advancement of agriculture, food and human values through their work in universities, colleges, government agencies, NGOs, consultancies, etc.

Nomination Procedure:

  • A cover letter from the principal nominator detailing the member's significant contributions in extension, policy, program development, and/or other areas as they pertain to this award.
  • A current vita or resumé for the nominee.
  • Two or three letters of support (at least one letter from an AFHVS member).
