Announcing the Joint 2007 Annual Meetings of the

Celebrating the 20th anniversary of the founding of both organizations.

In recognition of the 20th anniversaries of the organizations’ founding, the theme of the 2007 joint meeting is Changing Ecologies of Food and Agriculture: Building on 20 Years of Scholarship. The dialectic between eco-social diversity and economic efficiencies directly or indirectly informs many issues for both organizations and is at the heart of the struggle for sustainability. Victoria is a striking example of this dialectic – an international agro-culinary tourist destination that demonstrably supports its island food community. However, Victoria imported 15% of the food consumed 50 years ago and now imports 90%. Thus, Victoria is a fitting venue for this 20th anniversary meeting because it is a microcosm of the larger scale dynamics challenging global agro-food sustainability.

Over the past decade, Victoria (the seat of BC government) and Southern Vancouver Island have become an international gastronomic tourism destination that has gained a rapidly growing and well deserved reputation. A thriving urban Victoria restaurant scene is driven by the internationally renowned agro-entrepreneurial producers of foods and wines of the Cowichan Valley (about 40 minutes north) and Gulf Islands (30 minutes by ferry). In addition, a new breed of fishers and wild forest harvesters sustainably provide local treasures from area seas and forests. Activities associated with the conference will include numerous agro-tourism and nature-based packages such as whale watching off Victoria’s shores, bike or bus wine and food tours of the Cowichan Valley and Gulf Islands, kayaking trips of local marine reserves, surfing and beachcombing at Tofino’s Long Beach (a UNESCO’s World Heritage Site), and gastronomic tours of Victoria’s famous “China Town” and the "edible beach.” Victoria is an internationally recognized vacation destination and thus is an ideal locale for a family vacation <http://www.tourismvictoria.com>.
